ORIGINAL: The largest and most probable objection to the installation of a prison ministry at my church is going to be that if these people were out of the church long enough to commit a terrible crime, they will not be willing to take steps toward salvation without an aggressive intervention. While a serious intervention in the lives of these people might benefit a small number, it is not the way the ministry would go about making a change in their lives. The evangelists sent to the prison would initially make themselves visible to the inmates. Before their arrival, it will be made absolutely clear that none of the prisoners will be required to participate, and that it is a completely voluntary project. The ministers’ first and primary job is to strike up curiosity among the prisoners who have no initial interest in participating or making a change. The success of the ministry will rely most heavily on word of mouth rumors spread on the ‘yard’. If just a few of the inmates attend sessions and feel it is making a positive impact, half the work is already complete. An aggressive intervention is not what these people need and is not at all the intended mission.
George Cornell, and Associated Press Religion writer shed some light on the positive effects present in the lives of those prisoners who took part in religious studies while they were incarcerated. In 1990, he wrote an article entitled “Study on Effectiveness of Prison Ministries”. Throughout the article Cornell creates a rough list of all the differences in the prisoner’s behavior after being released from jail.

REVISION:The largest and most probable objection to the installation of a prison ministry at my church will be that if these prisoners were out of the church long enough to commit a crime as distant from religion as murder or rape, they will not be willing to take steps toward salvation without a serious intervention.

The practical proposal I have chosen for my essay is to install a prison ministry at my home church in Baytown, TX. I am interested in this topic because I have always had an extremely strong feeling of sympathy for people who are spending their time alone because of a terrible mistake. I was brought up in a spiritually strong environment. I have always been taught to accept everyone with the same grace God has shown me. I have done nothing to deserve the love of God. In fact, I have done about all I can do to warrant God’s rejection. Because of the ideas around which my home life was centered for eighteen years, I believe firmly that those in prison should not be cast out of the church when they have already been removed from any situation with the purpose of social stimulation. In addition to providing Texas prisoners a feeling of inclusion and acceptance, a prison ministry will offer prisoners brief relief from the drudgery that is life in prison. The absence of a prison ministry at my church is a problem because it proves our congregation is not doing its best to fulfill its statement of purpose: “making disciples everywhere”. This is a problem for the prisoners not reached by family members or other prison ministries who desire to embark on a spiritual journey from their cells. These people will suffer mentally and spiritually. Mentally because the number of unfulfilled desires is doubled. When they are already isolated beyond solitude, they are not offered the opportunity to share some of their feelings, opinions or views regarding their religion. The congregation of our church in addition to the pastor at our church have the power to solve the problem. The problem has not been solved up to this point because no one has stepped up to initiate a prison outreach ministry. The problem would be lessened by simply installing said organization. The probable benefits are numerous. One of which is an increased morale among a number of prisoners who were otherwise unable to share thoughts on religion and the Bible. Another is the fulfillment of our church’s statment of purpose in making disciples everywhere. The costs associated with the installment of a prison ministry would lie in the purchase of gasoline and materials for the prisoners. The congregation would be on board with this plan with little persuasion. The congregation would bear this cost as ministers for the church. This proposal should be enacted because it is important for Christians, as stated in the Bible to love one another. Reaching out to prisoners directly is an explicit act of love toward others. My proposal is better than alternative proposals because alternative proposals are few. Writing letters to the prisoners, while a nice gesture, does not serve as a warm, direct act of grace.

The most interesting story to me was one in the Houston Press entitled “These Kids Go to the Best High School in Houston” by Todd Spivak. This story in particular peaked my interest because it discusses why on earth this school coiuld be called “the best”. Spivak opens with a rather annoying presumption that Michael E. DeBakey high school was rated by a study the best high school in the Houston area. First just claiming all of their students are fantastic at learning. However the author quickly supports these claims with a reference to ‘Children at Risk’, the program which sponsored the study in conjunction with the Houston Press. This helps the reader understand precisely why DeBakey high school earned ‘first place’. I would probably not have selected this story as my favorite of all the selections in the three publications had the format of the Houston Press’ website not drawn me in visually first. A billion headlines crowd the homepage and links are provided to each story. The Houston Press does a remarkable job providing the reader a feel of what their publication is about, and to what readership its work is directed. A large part of their homepage was geared toward Art, Music Entertainment and food. I wrote my first essay on how fast FOOD affects CULTURE… I’d say that almost every story of this category appeals to me. Food and I have a very close relationship, and music is my major here at U.H.
If I chose the story about DeBakey high school, I would have many actions from which to choose. The story lends itself to a number of potential research questions as well. My research question would be “What can we do to bring all the high schools in the Houston area up to the same level with DeBakey(and the other elite public schools)?
If I chose this for my research question, I would need to first find out the top public schools on the same academic level as DeBakey. Also needed is the methods each employs to help each student succeed that differ from the ‘standard’ teaching/administrating methods. Before distinguishing these different methods I would have to identify the teaching methods that are considered orthodox. I could definitely contact professors here at UH concerning methods of teaching. Although I am and education major, I have not had any education classes. I am unsure exactly which publications on the web would provide such information. However, I am sure that many authors have argued extensively about the standards of public schools.
Other local issues I have considered for this essay include action to change the way the Cougar Card works here at UH. Students cannot purchase anything at the university book store with their university ID/debit card. I have also considered a call to action proposing an improvement in social life at the on campus housing locations. Comparatively, the University of Houston has a nonexistant dorm life.

The topic I have chosen for my causal essay is the cause of the popularity of fast food restaurants. My research question for this topic is, “Why have fast food restaurants become such a predominate facet of American culture? What has caused Americans to become dependent on culinary convenience?”
This topic peaks my interest because I have a very sincere love for food, and the power it has to bring people together. Spending time with people is something I have always enjoyed. Time spent with people over a meal prepared by a family member is dear to me. Because I grew up in an environment dedicated to family values, searching for the cause of its compromise (fast food) is worth while. My chosen career path is Music Education. Like music, food is an art. Quality music is easy to find almost anywhere. Free outdoor performances are given often by symphonies, especially in as big a city as Houston. However, quality food isn’t as accessible. High end restaurants aren’t known to provide free meals to the public. A large percentage of our population is cheated out of a special meal because of money. I most enjoy sharing my art with other people. I aim to decipher why the art of fine cooking isn’t as easy to enjoy.

In producing the TV show ‘Glee’, FOX has in turn produced a condensed array of all the characters in the story America loves to love. Although we have all seen shows in which the talented, prudish choir girl falls for the ‘rough around the edges’ athlete, ‘Glee’ offers a hysterical spin. Although it has been labeled a “dramatic comedy”, a vast majority of the stories told in ‘Glee’ cater to an audience ready to laugh, not think. Jokes far outweigh serious issues in these tales from the choral hall as these teens struggle to make their club known (again) throughout their high school.

In contrast to most shows crowding our channels, ‘Glee’ shamelessly pokes fun at the drama experienced by today’s high schoolers. America receives a much needed breath of fresh air while enjoying a break from the hard, dark issues tackled in some other sitcoms on TV. For example, abc’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ confronts pain, stress and death relentlessly, with a few one-liners sprinkled in for comedic relief. Personally, song and dance juxtaposed with witty one-liners and avant garde personalities is vastly more appealing. When it is said that ‘Glee’ offers stereotypes and weak, stale, or stock characters, true words are spoken. But missed is the idea that these stereotypes and characters are the very butts of the jokes. Other TV shows, like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ present the serious doctor stereotype which has already been exhausted by ‘ER’. ‘Glee’ covers familiar ground, not boring ground. ’Glee’ appeals to viewers similar to the characters (teenagers experiencing earth-shattering drama daily) as well as the parents who poke fun of the very kids they used to be. Instead of having to come up with original jabs directed at the ridiculous trials and tribulations endured by America’s high schoolers, parents can watch ‘Glee’ and be provided with that material. A lot of times, thinking gets in the way of entertainment. ‘Glee’ allows its viewers to disengage completely from thought and analysis and simply enjoy a show, a concept which is frequently forgotten in television. I find myself having forgotten that the primary reason I watch television or movies is to be ENTERTAINED.

Song and dance have been a vital part of American entertainment. In historical Hollywood, one couldn’t dream of finding a job in the pictures without extensive training/talent in acting, song and dance. The well-rounded movie star has fallen at the feet of the one with all the looks and inheritance. ‘Glee’ shines new light on an old ideal, once embraced by the mainstream viewer. In a sense, it is reviving the lost art of entertainment, now only visible on Broadway. I think ‘Glee’ will be revered for its efforts to bring back an era and an aspect of American culture which deserves widespread acknowledgment and appreciation.

Believer:

In William McGurn’s informative article regarding a college education and its diminished vitality to achieving prosperity, several claims are made to support the idea that while pursuing work out of high school isn’t for everyone, college is not a universal life plan, either. To believe each and every high school graduate should endure at least four years of treacherous lectures, exams and professors who don’t really consider what is going on in your life outside of their class, is absurd. To state that everyone should attend college is as general a statement as everyone should have children, or get married, or buy a house. One of the most attractive benefits of citizenship in a country such as the United States is the right to choose how one will live, without danger of persecution or punishment. Mr. McGurn is wholly correct when he claims “…On average, a college grad will make much more money…Averages, however, never tell the whole story.” In addressing his opponents and mentioning their claims, he uses them as facilitators to his argument. When the opponents state that, on average, college grads make more money, they omit the population most important to McGurn’s claim. By default, the statistics built on averages and majorities exclude the ‘everyone’ mentioned in the subtitle ‘College isn’t for everyone.’

Doubter:

While McGurn’s article mentions wholes in the argument supporting ‘college is for everyone’ somewhat effectively, he ignores the present logic in the support thereof. Upon high school graduation, especially in the modern day of advancing technology and increased opportunity, it seems only logical that one would desire to advance themselves in an intellectually stimulating environment. In one’s aspirations toward personal goals including lifelong investments in their future, college is the most profitable choice. College has, over the years, become the American key to success. Upon comparing a college education to a set of specialized skills slowly learned in the workplace, the obviously superior choice is education. While some can be learned about the job itself, the working environment fails to provide the necessary higher learning needed to advance past average in today’s social and economic climate. As well as necessary, college has become increasingly accessible to more people. Federal financial aid has progressed and it is less difficult to stomach the costs of an education beyond high school. College provides an environment and opportunities beyond the capacity of the workplace in equipping young America with the proper skills to achieve personal wealth and intellectual progression. With the increased requirements for jobs, the increased government assistance financially, and the overall advances in education, a college education is the more sensible decision.

Many short passages introduce many smaller issues within this passage. One issue this passage deals with is the full coverage health plan. This part of the passage participates in a discourse determining whether this health plan solves all the problems faced by one who really ‘benefits’. Although this argument is a subtopic in the larger ongoing debate, and is not crucial to many, a good argument is present when the narrator states that if one’s entire family died suddenly, “he would have nothing to worry about” because he wouldn’t have to pay any medical bills. This is the claim presented in the paragraph regarding the comprehensive health plan. The paragraph offers an array of gory hypothetical situations regarding his six daughters. The narrator states that if all of his daughters fell severely ill simultaneously, or were riddled with bullets, he would have nothing to worry about because he would not have to pay a dime. This is an implicit claim stating that Larry’s only concern in the passing of his daughters would be to take care of it all without spending any money.

The short story assumes a somewhat calm, dry tone. In each of the introductions of people, things, and places, imagery is vivid and the focus is on the process of how things around the office. However, included within each of the paragraphs are short pieces of gossip or rumors. These details give the reader a reason to stay interested. No reader is particularly interested in the way things run in an office regarding copy machines, cubicles and answering machines. It is each of the small pictures of the employee’s personal lives which make the reader feel involved and included. The reader’s emotions are worked on when personal information is revealed about each employee in the office. Readers are not likely to be intrigued by a story describing normal people in a normal office, doing normal work. The reader is lulled by the hum of the air conditioner and the click of several keyboards in a dull office setting, when he is thrust into another setting. For example, Amanda Pierce is a seemingly normal mother of a child with autism, who is proud of her son’s creations. The reader is glancing into her cubicle at the art when the setting changes. Although the reader is still in the office, he cannot help but visualize the sexual abuse inflicted on Amanda by her husband. The reader gets this sort of ‘whiplash’ when introduced to terribly interesting situations such as this one experienced by the Ms. Pierce. On a personal note, my emotions dipped into sympathy, laughter and confusion throughout the short story.
